Halloween and old-time radio are synonymous in our house, so, naturally, I had to take
advantage of the opportunity to present a few programs that you may not have heard
before.
First up, we have an episode of Inner Sanctum Mysteries. This is one of those shows
that people that were alive in the radio era remember very fondly, but in spite of its
popularity, it was not particularly well preserved. As such, quite a few of the episodes
that we have available today exist because discs were made to be aired overseas by
the Armed Forces Radio Service. That’s the origination of this episode, which originally
aired on March 21 st 1949. It’s called “Only the Dead Die Twice” and tells the story of a
hearse driver that is offered $1,000 to dispose of a body.
Next up on the docket is an early episode of The Whistler from before the time of the
Columbia movie series. It was a west coast only show at this point. I always found it
interesting that Columbia picked up a west coast only radio series for a series of B
movies. It’s murder and mayhem in a deserted villa in “House of Fear” from June 19th 1943.
Finally, we have an episode of the syndicated series Murder at Midnight. It’s called “The
Black Swan” and is a bizarre story of a murderous ship. It’s a weird one that I bet you
haven’t heard and is perfect for Halloween weekend!
